The American Red Cross is encouraging communities to prepare for emergencies by giving blood.

“Having a strong blood supply is part of being prepared for any emergency so when we have patients who need blood we don’t have to wait for someone to supply it”, said Rodney Wilson, a spokesman with the American Red Cross.

Donors gave one pint of blood which, according to the Red Cross, can be given to up to three people. “The Red Cross also encourages the public to get prepared by making a disaster plan for their homes or workplaces”.

The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg will host a blood drive for the American Red Cross on Wednesday, September 16, from 11:30 a.m.to 5 p.m.in Smith Hall Lounge.

Thousand Oaks: From 1 to 7:15 p.m. September 21, 28 and 30 at Thousand Oaks Inn, 75 W. T.O. Blvd. These two are among numerous opportunities the Red Cross is offering during the second half of September throughout Wayne County.

All blood types are needed. Because blood takes about 48 hours to be tested, processed and made available for patients, it’s the blood already on the shelves that can help save the day when emergencies occur.

“Donating blood can save someone’s life”.
