Star-studded The Big Short drops into Oscar race
The film is based on the Michael Lewis book, “The Big Short: Inside The Doomsday Machine”. That’s certainly the case in this first promo for The Big Short, which tells the story of a risky investment undertaken just before the global economic collapse of the ’00s. Seeing an opportunity, the group essentially bet against the markets and found a way to profit from the crash.

Based on the best-selling book by Michael Lewis (“Moneyball” and “The Blind Side“), “The Big Short” recounts the events before the housing bubble burst, sending America’s and then the world’s economy into a tailspin. The film features an all-star cast that includes Christian Bale, Brad Pitt, Steve Carell, Melissa Leo, Ryan Gosling, and Marisa Tomei.
So, we’ve got Bale, Pitt, Carell and Gosling, with various other big names, running an nearly unthinkable scam and coming off very well out of it. It sounds like a cross between The Wolf of Wall Street and Ocean’s Eleven, which is probably one of the best mash-ups I’ve ever heard off. The movie may moreover be closing out the AFI Fest. Indeed, it’s shaping up to be a particularly interesting fall for film lovers. They have operated largely under the radar and it didn’t seem they would be ready in time to compete in what has suddenly become a heated Oscar corridor field, after many awards-bait films premiered at the Telluride, Venice and Toronto festivals.
