South Africa: Opposition asks police to investigate WCup bid

Since the corruption charges Blatter’s only official trip overseas has been to Russian Federation for the World Cup qualifying draw in St Petersburg in late July.

“A letter, written and signed by Jordaan in his capacity the CEO of the Bid Committee in December 2007, shows that he instructed Federation Internationale de Football Association to authorise the $10 million payment to CONCACAF”.

“The funds were originally intended for football development in South Africa and could have been used to buy 780 000 soccer balls, 270 000 pairs of boots, kits for 26 000 soccer teams, and 140 brand new soccer pitches”.

“It thus appears that Jordaan and Oliphant were complicit with, and indeed seemingly central to, the bribery scheme described in the (U.S.) indictment and mentioned by Blazer in his guilty plea”, the DA said in papers handed to police in Cape Town. “It’s not for me to support someone”, said Hayatou, who has been CAF president for 27 years. Jordaan did not immediately reply to a message seeking comment.

UEFA has cited support for its president Platini from voters in four of FIFA’s six continental bodies, though not Africa where Blatter traditionally had a strong base.

In June, Federation Internationale de Football Association said Valcke was not responsible for making the bank transfer to Warner and it was done by the world body’s finance committee chairman at the time, Julio Grondona.

FIFA’s African vice-president Issa Hayatou said Tuesday he is not publicly backing a candidate in the election to succeed Sepp Blatter.

Swiss attorney general Michael Lauber revealed last week that his office has seized apartments in the Swiss Alps and searched property in western Switzerland in a widening case that could take years to complete. Valcke has been accused of agreeing to allow World Cup ticket prices to be sold at a ridiculously inflated price.
