Burkina Faso’s coup leaders have reportedly released Interim President Michel Kafando.

The move was condemned by United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, the White House, the African Union, the regional West African community, ECOWAS, and the former colonial power, France.

Leaders of a coup in Burkina Faso said on Friday they had freed the president and reopened borders, in an apparent olive branch to mediators and protesters who rallied in the capital and other cities against the putsch.

“A key aim of the coup was to derail elections that could have hamstrung the political clout of the military, including key players in the presidential security regiment”, said Maja Bovcon, an Africa analyst with the global risk consultant Verisk Maplecroft.

General Gilbert Diendere is now the de facto leader of Burkina Faso, although the overthrow of the interim government has drawn global condemnation.

The military released a statement on Friday saying that Michel Kafando has been released from military custody.

The announcment comes after AP reported that armed forces personnel assigned to protect the president had arrested the transitional head of state and prime minister.

In the announcement aired early on Thursday on national television and radio, the statement said that the transitional government had been dissolved.

Compaore was deposed by protestor last year after he considered extending his rule of 27 years.

The three organisations reaffirmed their full support to the Transition at this critical time, for the conclusion of its mission with the conduct of elections scheduled to hold on October 11, 2015.

“There is a critical lack of dialogue among actors, and this will negatively affect national unity and cohesion”, Sall warned.
