The “Internet of Things” is a vision of the future where connected devices interact directly with other devices and data, without any human intervention.

“With almost 2,500 survey respondents from 15 countries, including the USA , Brazil, China, India and Germany, we are able to provide quantifiable evidence that the IoT is a not just a concept, but a real global accelerator of the third platform”.
More than 70 enterprises attended the Internet of Things solution Summit in Hanoi on September 22, part of a series of IoT events held by Intel worldwide. At least half of them were familiar with the term “IoT”, IDC said.
The IoT is particularly strong in healthcare. 72 percent of the healthcare industry believes IoT as strategic, followed by transportation and manufacturing at 67 percent and 66 percent, respectively.
“IDC’s 2015 survey shows the regional differences in terms of awareness, adoption, and plans for implementation”, added Carrie MacGillivray, Vice President, IoT & Mobile.
The IDC survey results, in some respects, echo those of a report on IoT deployment that Strategy Analytics released this summer.
“The reach, reliability and return on investment (ROI) capabilities of Inmarsat’s network are truly enabling the Internet of Everywhere“, said David Wigglesworth, Vice President, Internet of Everywhere, Inmarsat, who joined the company earlier this year to spearhead Inmarsat’s M2M and IoT initiatives.
They ranged from small and medium-sized businesses to large enterprises.
The current emergent wave of IoT comprises billions of devices that will proliferate the personal and business domains in all sectors. This is useful in automating monitoring of patients with heart or Alzheimer’s conditions, and in assisted living, emergency response and health monitoring applications.
Both existing and potential IoT users wanted to solve pragmatic and pressing business issues that impact daily operations.
Speakers from Rolls Royce to the London College of Fashion worked to make sense of a world where everything is connected and data is shared at the latest Cambridge Wireless IoT event.
While considered leaders in the IoT, hardware vendors lost ground in 2015 as software vendors are overtaking equipment vendors.
How likely is a repeat of this scenario as the IoT takes off?
“The IoT is no longer a future definition, but a change happening every day in all areas”, he said. Everything that you see, control, interact and monitor will be on the IoT platform. “This will be an important step in advancing the Internet of Medical Things”.
Sheer pragmatism will damp down internecine warfare because “the technology can’t advance if the different components, devices and software protocols don’t work together”, DiDio said.
