Cowboys acquire veteran QB Matt Cassel in trade with Bills

Romo was sacked and slammed onto the turf late in the third quarter against the Eagles, clutching his left shoulder before eventually sitting up and walking off the field.

Based on preliminary indications, Romo is expected to miss eight to 10 weeks, a source said. However, even though they’ve won their first two games of the year, the Cowboys are in some BIG trouble at the moment because of two critical injuries that were suffered during the start of the season. Veterans Christian Ponder, Matt Flynn, Josh Johnson and McLeod Bethel-Thompson will all get a chance to show the team’s front office and coaching staff if they are capable of being Brandon Weeden’s backup. That season, with the Chiefs, Cassel recorded 3,116 passing yards, 27 touchdowns and only seven interceptions.

With Romo’s absence, Brandon Weeden will likely lead the Cowboys offense for the next seven games.

The most optimistic time frame for Romo’s return is during a two-game Florida swing Nov. 15 (Buccaneers) and Nov. 22 (Dolphins). Bill Barnwell of Grantland pointed out that since Weeden entered the league, he’s been the single worst pocket passer in the NFL based on QBR – not the best number for a QB with much less mobility than Romo. Mainly because Witten is as tough a player as I’ve ever seen play the game and has only missed one start in his career.

For the next eight weeks, the Cowboys are going to need a spark to continue to compete in the NFC East without Romo and star wide receiver Dez Bryant (foot), and the deadly trio of Weeden, Cassel, and Moore are not the answer.

And Garrett knows better than to expect any sympathy for the Cowboys’ injuries woes, which have been significant. “That’s not the way we’re supposed to play football and that’s not what we’re all about”. It’s a combination of all those things, and unfortunately one of them would rear its head on every play.

The Cowboys have no guarantees going forward.

The injury could be manageable in the short term, to a degree, but that makes it no less gut-churning for Cowboys fans.

A person with direct knowledge of the negotiations tells The Associated Press that Ragnar asked for $20,000 per game over the next 10 years.

“Honestly, playing against those guys is a challenging as it gets”, Quinn said.
