WASHINGTON (AP) – Pope Francis was hard to spot in the motorcade of more than 20 armed SUVs and police cars that motored into the nation’s capital late Tuesday.

The pope’s message of embracing change found its literal representation in the further opening of Cuba, which has spent decades shrouded in secrecy, to media outlets and TV screens worldwide. There was a large group of people – lots of young people singing and cheering and yelling, Francesco, Francesco. “This has been a hallmark of Pope Francis even before he arrived in the Vatican“.

Afterward, Pope Francis will ride a Popemobile along the streets of Washington near the Ellipse just south of the White House.

Kathryn Evans converted to Catholicism in 2012 – just before Pope Francis became leader of the Roman Catholic Church in 2013.

During the visit, the pope will visit the White House and address a joint session of Congress, the first-ever by a pontiff.

Air traffic control officials will use the name “Shepherd One” when speaking to the American Airlines captain flying the plane.

John Serio, principal of Archbishop Chapelle High School in Metairie, will also see the Pope in Washington.

POGGIOLI: Well, actually, the questions focused on Cuba. He said that’s not so.

Pleva says, “The word Catholic means “universal”.

“Maybe an explanation gave an impression of being a little bit more left-leaning, but it would be a mistake”, he said.

“Father Dave likes to go big or go home, so as many as we could get is what the goal was”, she said. The pope has strongly upheld church teaching against same-sex marriage but adopted a welcoming tone toward gays themselves, saying, “Who am I to judge?” when asked about a supposedly gay priest. The pope meets with the Hispanic community and other immigrant families.

The Pope will likely touch on social issues like economic inequalities and climate change.

We didn’t talk about the past, the pope said, with the exception of Fidel’s Jesuit education and how the Jesuits made him study very hard. I think we’ll certainly hear that. The press conference was limited to Cuba.

But he said he did not intend to discuss the Cuban embargo in his speech to the US Congress, but he would talk more in general of the importance of bilateral agreements to promote progress, peace and the common good.
