University of Delaware: Lanterns remains mistaken for nooses
University of Delaware officials say what some had thought were “makeshift” nooses hanging from a tree on the Newark campus weren’t nooses after all.

Instead, police say they were remnants of paper lanterns from an event previously held on The Green.
At the same time, the sensitivity of our campus to this potential issue clearly indicates a need for continuing dialog within our community.
Another rally is now planned for outside Mitchell Hall, reports said, at 4:30 p.m.
At first school officials were calling it a “hate crime”.
Interim university President Nancy Targett initially announced Wednesday that the discovery of the items hanging in front of a campus building Tuesday night prompted a hate crime investigation.
The university also alerted students of the incident, which remains under investigation.
I ask for the cooperation of all members of our community in this serious matter.
“The safety and inclusiveness of our campus are our top priorities and we will always act quickly and decisively to respond to the concerns of our community”, read the statement. Investigators are asking anyone who noticed anything suspicious between dusk and 10 p.m. Tuesday outside Mitchell Hall to contact police at 302-831-2222.

The statement said a campuswide gathering would be held Wednesday, but no further details were immediately available.
