Trinidad AG paves way for Warner extradition proceedings

Warner formerly oversaw the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (ConcacafConcacaf), which is Fifa’s section in the Americas.

Presiding over the proceedings was deputy Chief Magistrate Mark Wellington in the Eighth Court who held in the absence of Chief Magistrate Marcia Ayers Caesar.

Trinidad and Tobago’s attorney general needed to sign off on documents to go ahead with extradition proceedings – the next step – but the ouster of the ruling People’s Partnership delayed their signing by new Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi until Monday, five days after the deadline.

The legal team assembled by Nicholas included James Lewis QC; Allan Newman, QC; Pamela Elder South Carolina; Israel Khan, South Carolina; Gerald Ramdeen; Jagdeo Singh; Wayne Sturge; and Brent Hallpike.

Warner is among 14 former and current worldwide football officials facing a series of criminal charges in the U.S. including wire fraud, racketeering, money laundering among other offences related to his tenure as a Fifa vice president.

Wellington asked for time to review the documents and the arguments from lawyers representing the state.

Al-Rawi assumed office on September 9, and among the first matters he addressed was the Warner extradition file.

However, Warner’s attorneys are challenging the decision, stating that Al-Rawi missed the September 16 date for signing off on the documents, and as a result, Warner should be discharged.

In general elections earlier this month, Warner lost a re-election bid for a Parliament seat by a wide margin.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) complaint has been made against the bid leaders Danny Jordaan and Molefi Oliphant.
