Moto X Pure Edition review: The smartphone for everyone

You can actually argue that Motorola makes Android better with the addition of a few apps, the highlight of which includes Moto Display, Assist, Voice and Actions. Also, on the Moto Maker website you will find 10 variants of colors for the metal plate which houses the camera and the logo. It also starts at $400 off contract, and works on just about every USA carrier. The Motorola Nexus 6 has the Snapdragon 805 quad-core processor, which is more than adequate but would be a little less than the Moto X Pure Edition.

As with the Moto X Play, we’ve run the Moto X Style through Geekbench 3 and SunSpider, and the results are startling.

One thing’s for sure: For two phones that are practically the same size, these devices have some very significant differences. But, which tops which?

Galaxy Note 5 on top; Moto X Pure Edition on bottom. There are various pinhole mics along the back for recording audio during video. The 3.5 audio jack and microSIM/microSD tray, which require pin removal, sit on the top. It’s old and time for the flagships to move past it. Given that the Moto X has a more modest price tag and spec sheet, we’ll give it a pass. The placement of the power button and volume rocker on the same side presents issues, however. However, it’s better than most of the other phones that are available in the Indian market at the same price range. It easily scuffs and scratches. Metallic accents here and there are also in the list of options.

Design and build qualityMotorola manages to introduce subtle changes in its phones year after year, all the while keeping the inherent design language constant. It’s water repellent, meaning it will shrug off spills and splashes, but shouldn’t be submerged.

The Moto X Play is a dual-SIM phone with 4G LTE compatibility which is a must for today’s smartphones.

The value for money of the Moto X Pure could justify the first answer, since it offers a capable Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor, 3 GB of RAM, a 5.7-inch display featuring QHD resolution and a powerful 20.7-megapixel camera at a very competitive price.

Unlike the Moto X Play and Moto G, the back cover on the X Style is not removable, so the options for customisation are even more limited here.

The display on the Moto 360 is 35mm or 40mm in diameter, depending on whether or not you ahve the 42mm or 46mm diameter watch. It produces more vibrant colors and deeper blacks. Still, AMOLED is the better choice if image quality is your primary concern. However, the latter device has a better front camera of 8MP, but it lacks LED flash – another advantage for the Motorola device, whose secondary shooter supports 5MP.

Keep in mind that we’re nitpicking here. When the brightness is turned all the way down, this screen doesn’t suffer from the pinkish tint that the previous Moto X or even Nexus 6 do. Users won’t be disappointed, and it’s especially good at cutting through the type of glare found outdoors on a sunny day.

Therefore, if Motorola will indeed roll out Android M Marshmallow OS update, the new Moto DROID Turbo 2 will be the first in line to get the update and its predecessor may get the software update early next year, although Motorola offered no confirmation for this yet. We’ll compare these devices in order to see if they have any features in common and to conclude which one is a better buy. They are much louder and crisper than I’ve heard in the past as well.
