Xiaomi isn’t taking the conventional route with its wireless network, it won’t be buying spectrum from the government and setting up its own infrastructure, rather it will set up an MVNO or mobile virtual network operator.
Users can choose to be run through either China Unicom or China Telecom’s networks. They have failed in China, wherein the mobile telecommunications market is dominated by three state-owned companies: China Telecom, China Unicom and China Mobile.
Xiaomi’s new wireless business, “Mi Mobile”, offers voice and data services. The first provides subscribers with $0.02 per minute voice calls, each text messages and MB of data. Xiaomi is offering two plans: a pay-as-you-go option and a monthly tariff of 59 yuan (about RM40). This plan will be available in public beta starting this October, for those of you who are interested.
Six months back, Google also announced the launch of a MVNO service in USA called “Fi” which hosted through Sprint Corp and T-Mobile’s networks.
The Chinese company on Tuesday also unveiled its new Michigan Bluetooth Speaker with aluminium body and 1500mAh built-in battery.
