Facebook-owned social image sharing startup Instagram now has 400 million monthly active users.

Perhaps even more notable than the sheer number of people sharing, commenting and liking photos (80 million daily, according to Instagram) is the global growth of the service. To all the new Instagrammers: welcome! Instagram added that amount of users in roughly nine months.

Yes, it’s no mistake that the team wanted to let all of us know that it’s growing internationally, the key to grabbing its “next 400M”.

More than 75 percent of Instagram’s users are outside the United States, the company wrote in a blog post. The app also has crowned a new queen.

Industry tracker eMarketer estimates that Instagram’s worldwide ad revenue this year will grow rapidly, hitting $600 million. At the beginning of this month, Instagram advertised in eight countries.

Of course, Instagram still has quite a ways to go if it wants to catch up to Facebook, which now has well over a billion monthly active users.

The unusually long search has some investors and analysts anxious over the future of Twitter, which has failed to ignite the kind of growth that many had anticipated when it launched its public offering in 2013.
