Meanwhile, a new fire that broke out to our south, in the Tassajara Valley near Monterey and Big Sur and the small town of Jamesburg, has burned 1,086 acres and 10 homes so far.

The Red Cross is providing quarters at Carmel Middle School, located at 4380 Carmel Valley Road, for families that are displaced by the fire.

Cal Fire and the Monterey County Sheriff’s Department conducted a joint investigation after discovering a body outside of a burned-out vehicle.

Other media reports stated that the death may be connected to the start of the blaze, but Cal Fire spokeswoman Colleen Baxter said the cause of the fire has not been determined.

On Monday afternoon, evacuation orders and advisories were lifted outside the fire perimeter, fire officials said, adding that people are still being told to not enter the fire perimeter.

Containment of the Butte Fire edged up to 74 percent over the weekend, and survey crews have identified 545 residences and 356 outbuildings destroyed and 42 structures damaged.

Nonetheless, Eaton plans on rebuilding rather than leaving the area. The park, at 501 Monterey-Salinas Highway, is being used as a base camp for firefighting crews.
