But the district had contended that it should be able to adopt policies that ensure the safety of students and staff. The policy bans all weapons on school property and requires school officials to go into emergency mode if a risky weapon is spotted.

“Guns don’t belong in the Ann Arbor public schools”, William Blaha, attorney for the district, told the judge.

Kuhnke said Michigan law prohibiting local governments from making firearms policies doesn’t apply to schools.

“We’re very grateful that the judge saw the merits in the argument”, Ann Arbor Superintendent Jeanice Swift said.

Thiede, who said schools are unsafe places, noted he’s carried his gun twice in schools while picking up his grandchildren and has had no problem.

The group that filed the gun lawsuit suit against the Ann Arbor district says it will appeal the ruling, the Freep reports.

FOX 2: “Are you going to carry a gun in school?” “I don’t believe it is a teacher and administrator’s job to determine the intent of that person who is walking into a school”.

WWJ’s Legal Analyst Charlie Langton says that he’s not surprised by the judge’s ruling.

However, Judge Carol Kuhnke said the law clearly defines “a local unit of government” as “a city, village, township, or county”.
