The hiring plan for the holiday season is down from an estimated 3,600 seasonal workers in 2014.

US retailers get nearly a 3rd of their annual gross sales and virtually 40 % of their income within the buying season that begins a day after Thanksgiving and goes on till early January.
Last year Macy’s planned to hire about 86,000 seasonal workers during for the 2014 holiday season, up from about 83,000 a year earlier. The parent company of Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s stores, with headquarters in both Cincinnati and New York, has already announced it’s hiring 85,000 people for the 2015 Christmas shopping season – including about 2,500 in Ohio Macy’s stores. Its shares are down nearly 10 percent over the past year.
The positions will be filled at Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s stores, call centers, distribution centers and online fulfillment centers nationwide. Many companies boost their workforces temporarily to meet increased demand.
But, Macy’s says that numerous positions require people to work evenings, weekends or overnight shifts, adding that seasonal associates could be offered open year-round positions based on their performance over the holiday season.

“The Martinsburg fulfillment center continues to perform very well and is doing a great job serving Macy’s customers”, he said.
At the Goldman Sachs Global Retailing Conference held on September 9, Macy’s president Jeffrey Gennette stated that online interactions now influence 60% of the company’s store purchases.
Terry J. Lundgren, chairman and CEO of Macy’s, said in the press release that the additional staffing allows them to provide extra “help to customers”.

More than 1,000 people will be hired across the country to support the 88th annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, Santalands and other iconic holiday events. “Especially at the holidays, we employ students working during break to help pay tuition, retirees seeking to remain active, and individuals from many walks of life wanting to supplement their income”.
