US Wants To Station Advanced Nukes in Germany

The Kremlin says Russian Federation will take countermeasures if the U.S. places new nuclear weapons at a base in Germany. The US move, which Peskov claims will build tensions and create imbalance inside Europe, comes amid building animosity between Russian and the U.S.-led West over Moscow’s actions in Ukraine and its military’s continual probing of Europe’s skies and global waters.

Germany’s ZDF public television network headlines on Tuesday September 22nd, “New U.S. Atomic Weapons to Be Stationed in Germany,” and reports that the USA will bring into Germany 20 new nuclear bombs, each being four times the destructive power of the one that was used on Hiroshima.

The USA military responded that the weapons could not be considered as new. “The steps taken will be needed for ensuring Russia’s national security and re-establishment of the strategic balance”, he said.

Budget documents indicate that the base would be provided with funding for the forthcoming storage and deployment of the new B61-12s.

“With the new bombs the boundaries blur between tactical and strategic nuclear weapons”, Hans Kirstensen of the Nuclear Information Project in Washington told ZDF.

“The United States has reduced its non-strategic nuclear weapons by approximately 90% since the end of the Cold War”, the spokesman, Lt. Col. Joe Sowers, said. As part of nuclear sharing, host countries carry out consultations, make decisions on weapons policy and maintain equipment required for the use of nuclear weapons, including warplanes capable of delivering them.
