Samsung announces new virtual reality headset, halves price
“Oculus Connect 2 is our second annual developer conference where engineers, designers, and creatives from around the world come together to learn about the future of the Oculus platform and push virtual reality forward”, said the firm. Samsung’s Gear VR, a VR headset that uses Samsung flagship phones, is powered by Oculus software and has been available since previous year. According to Peter Koo, SVP of Technology Strategy for Samsung, the early Gear VR model was for the developers and innovators and early adopters.

The new headset, though, has a much nicer price: at just $99, it’s the flawless VR tool for those hesitant to spend hundreds of dollars to try virtual reality for themselves.
Hulu, Netflix, Vimeo, Lionsgate, 20th Century Fox, Tivo, Twitch and Facebook are all bringing video content to the new Samsung Gear VR headset, which is shipping in November (in time for Black Friday).
While little in the way of app logistics have been revealed about the forthcoming virtual reality game, Oculus VR founder Palmer Lucky also announced it would be available from the company’s Oculus Store. There was little in the way of details, simply saying that the Windows 10 version of Minecraft would be compatible with the virtual reality headset.
Games will figure prominently in the Gear VR. Among the mobile devices it works with are Samsung’s newly released Galaxy s6 and Note 5.
Netflix and Hulu are going 3D. The company has also partnered with movie studios for Oculus Video, which will offer films on the device. We are just scratching the surface of how Hollywood and VR will revolutionize entertainment by exploring innovative ways to develop immersive experiences as a new storytelling medium.
Oculus also announced an alliance with Netflix to stream 360-degree video that will let viewers change perspective as if they were in the middle of on-screen action, with new Netflix content set to be released.
