TJ Brodie suffers broken hand, will miss 3-6 weeks

The Calgary Flames blueliner broke a bone in his hand blocking a shot in the third period of Wednesday’s game. The Flames kept many of their top players in Calgary, including the likes of Sean Monahan, Johnny Gaudreau, Jiri Hudler, Michael Frolik, Mark Giordano and Dougie Hamilton.

The Flames open their regular season schedule at the Scotiabank Saddledome on October 7 when they welcome the Vancouver Canucks.

“The good news, if you can take any, is that he won’t need any surgery”, Treliving said. Hamilton, 22, finished the season third in Bruins ice time with an average of 21 minutes 20 seconds per game. His injury opens up the opportunity for other defensemen in training camp to show their abilities.

There’s no disputing the impact the rookie centre has had and will have on the franchise, but Hall, the first of four first overall draft selections the Oilers have stockpiled since 2010, and Eberle, in his sixth season, want to play a role as well.

That combination continuing is a strong possibility in Brodie’s absence.

The Flames say he is expected to miss three to six weeks.

The Flames captain felt some urgency to sort out defensive pairings with the loss of Brodie. “It was just fun to play again”.

“I was a bit nervous at the beginning, but I was pretty calm when the game started”, he said. We got caught out on a long shift and to have him not only make the save on the breakaway, but also on the penalty shot, that was a big thing for our group. Smid, who has a one-way contract, had surgery on a herniated disc in his neck in February.

Despite their youth, those two guys looked like they knew what they were doing out there as that bout could end up rivaling most of the fights we’ll see in the league this season.

Jakub Nakladal, 27, led the Czech Republic’s defencemen in scoring at the world championship with five assists in 10 games. Defenders Douglas Murray, Aaron Johnson and Ryan Wilson are now with the team on professional tryouts. Goaltender Cam Talbot, acquired in a trade with the New York Rangers, was in net to start the game; free-agent defenceman Andrej Sekera was paired with Mark Fayne; and, of course, there was McDavid.
