The USA embassy reportedly issued an advisory Thursday urging American citizens to avoid Alor Street, a popular tourist street in the city center, and its immediate surrounding areas because of “credible threat information regarding a potential terrorist act”.
Police would investigate such claims and also meet the embassy to gather information, he added.
Police said they were held for offenses such as raising funds for the militants, recruiting Malaysians and getting weapons for attacks targeting Kuala Lumpur and other strategic locations. The police today arrested three individuals over their suspected involvement in a potential attack on several areas in the city, purportedly by the Islamic State terror network.
The US Embassy warned that terror attacks have in the past happened on significant dates.
The three – a Malaysian, a Syrian and an Indonesian – were picked up by the Bukit Aman Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division on Thursday.
The Australian embassy issued a similar alert to its citizens.
This year Malaysian authorities have arrested a number of people allegedly planning attacks, including against entertainment venues in Kuala Lumpur.

It also advised Australians against visiting eastern state of Sabah due to the spate of kidnappings.
