Samsung opens new headquarters in Silicon Valley

If you happen to be passing through the area, Samsung’s new building certainly looks worth checking out. Till now the presence of Samsung in the valley was largely scattered, even though it has been here for over 30 years since it first entered the San Jose region in 1983.

In terms of its size, the building is 1.1 million square foot, and it will play host to a number of research labs working on semiconductors, LEDs and displays.

Jaesoo Han, Samsung president of Device Solutions America, said the opening of the new space represented “a major milestone” for the firm, adding it was its “most strategically important Samsung facility in the USA and also our biggest investment in Silicon Valley”. After Intel, Samsung is the world’s biggest chip maker, so the company will be keenly looking for new related opportunities in the Silicon Valley area and beyond. He went on to say that “Samsung’s goal is nothing less than to develop the best next-generation technologies for device solutions”. The office was inaugurated in a grand opening ceremony in the presence of dignitaries such as Samsung Electronics vice chairman and co-CEO Oh-Hyun Kwon; mayor of San Jose, Sam Liccardo; and the former mayor of San Jose, Chuck Reed.

To celebrate the expansion, Samsung will donate Dollars 100,000 to the Family Giving Tree and another USD 100,000 to the Second Harvest Food Bank, both part of the Silicon Valley community.

Deserving university students who are now enrolled in STEM-focused programs at a California State or University of California school will benefit from this program, beginning with a $50,000 gift to San Jose State University this year.
