The storm struck around 1 a.m. Friday on Johns Island southwest of downtown Charleston.

The National Weather Service (NWS) is urging residents in Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester countries to take cover, following a confirmed tornado touchdown.
Damage was also reported in West Ashley, which is part of the Charleston metropolitan area, according to the National Weather Service.
“That tend to make the case much more risky as individuals retire for the night that night and aren’t sensitive to tornado alert that could be issued”.
Extensive damage was reported on Johns Island, South Carolina, Charleston County Sheriff’s Office said. A news release says emergency responders encountered heavy debris from downed tress and power lines in the area of River and Brownswood roads.
There are reports of 10 homes with significant damage and trees down across the area causing power outages.

Numerous streets were closed because of downed trees and power lines, said James Ghi, a battalion chief with the St. John’s Fire District. Tornado warnings were issued as a result of the storm.
