According to the Daily Mail, he said that there is no guarantee the tradition will continue after his death, and that it is up to the Tibetan people whether another Dalai Lama should be appointed after him.

The Office of Tibet in Washington D.C. informed the University of Colorado Boulder on Friday that the Dalai Lama will not be able to attend any of his planned events in the USA next month for medical reasons, including a visit to CU Boulder meant to happen next month.
The Dalai Lama has canceled his October trip to the United States because of health problems, his representatives said today. “We deeply regret cancellation of the visit”, the statement said. For about 300 years the Dalai Lamas, or their regents, have led the Tibetan government, but China has occupied Tibet since 1950 and has long insisted it will appoint any successor to the post.
The Dalai Lama’s visit to UMass was a highly anticipated event. If tickets were purchased at the Mullins Center box office, the original ticket and form of payment must be presented.
The Dalai Lama also canceled private visits to Amherst College and Smith College.
There are no immediate plans to reschedule the visit.
