Volkswagen Board Continues To Deal With Emissions Fallout

The company will have to fix about 11 million of its diesel cars worldwide, far more than the 482,000 that were affected in the U.S.

The Transport Minister Alexander Dobrindt told the German parliament: “There’s also discussion now about 1.2-litre cars being affected”.

Meanwhile, more Volkswagen bosses are expected to fall on their swords as the German auto giant’s supervisory board meets over the rigging of emissions tests.

The software at the center of Volkswagen’s emissions scandal in the USA was built into the automaker’s cars in Europe as well, though it isn’t yet clear if it helped cheat tests as it did in the US, Germany said Thursday.

After his appointment, Mr Mueller said restoring the company’s reputation was his top priority.

Winterkorn had come under intense pressure since last Friday’s disclosure from the Environmental Protection Agency that the company had tried to dupe testers over emissions coming from its diesel cars.

On Wednesday, 23 September, Martin Winterkorn took the responsibility and resigned, while his mandate was supposed to be extended by two years.

“The supervisory board has accepted this decision with great respect for Winterkorn”.

Volkswagen shares have plunged around 20 percent since USA regulators said on Friday the company could face up to $18 billion in penalties for falsifying emissions tests. The United States Department of Justice is now investigating the case, according to the Washington Post.

“As part of this work they will re-run laboratory tests where necessary and compare them against real world driving emissions”.

Kurtz’s attorneys say VW’s actions have caused the values of the diesel cars to drop, and that the vehicles are not as fuel efficient as advertised.

He pledged to make Volkswagen an “an even stronger company”.

“Under my leadership, Volkswagen will do all it can to develop and implement the strictest compliance and governance standards in the whole industry”, Müller said in a statement.
