Hyundai Recalls 470000 Sonata Sedans Over Engine Fail

The vehicles in question were built between December 11, 2009, and April 12, 2012, at Hyundai’s Alabama, manufacturing facility, equipped with either a 2.0-liter turbo or 2.4-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine.

Hyundai reports that some metal debris may not have been removed from the crankshaft. That can restrict oil flow to the connecting rod bearings, causing them to fail. And…well, if an engine stalls when you’re on the road, we don’t have to tell you how badly that could go for you, particularly if you’re in the middle of merging on the highway.

Hyundai will fix either issue free of charge, replacing the brake light switch on the Accents and inspecting Sonatas, replacing “the engine assembly as necessary”. The extension will apply no matter if you’re the original owner, or if you bought the Sonata used.

Owners will be notified by November 2nd and the recall will officially begin when parts are available.

Hyundai has announced a recall of 470,000 Sonatas in the United States.

You can also contact NHTSA at 888-327-4236 and ask about safety campaign #15V568000. This could lead to the vehicle stalling, resulting in the risk of a crash.

The recall affects Hyundai Accent vehicles built between March 1, 2009 and February 11, 2011. Hyundai’s number for this recall is 131.
