You can now preorder a Glowforge 3D Maker Machine online

Glowforge’s printer lets people use raw materials like leather, paper, plastic, fabric, or cardboard and make products with a push of a button.

The 3D laser printer being offered by Glowforge is not really a printer as such, because it differs from real 3D printers which enable users to build upon material objects.

To be clear, this cuts and etches rather than adding layers like a traditional 3D printer does.

“The Glowforge turns everyone into a micro-manufacturer. Things are being created exactly for what’s needed and when they’re needed, domestically, on-the-spot”, said Dan Shapiro, CEO and creator of Glowforge in an interview with The Next Web.

To find out more about how this sleekly designed laser printer works, and more about the company, you can check the website out here or watch the below video.

Glowforge raised a solid million Series A from Foundry Group, True Ventures and others earlier this year to build a cheaper and smaller laser cutter that could maintain the same quality as higher end cutters found in professional shops and maker spaces.

According to the details shared by Glowforge, the new 3D laser printer makes use of subtractive technology for achieving the proper depth and precision. Glowforge demonstrated the machine’s abilities, creating a lampshade and a drone frame in just minutes. For example you could place a piece of wood in Glowforge and have it cut out a design that you have specified. That’s the elevator pitch for his company’s eponymous machine: A almost idiot proof CNC laser cutter and engraver.

Another big advantage to Glowforge’s new printer is the price.

Designs are derived from popular software such as Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator, Glowforge’s own online catalog, or even from drawings from pen and paper.

Glowforge is launching a 30-day day pre-order campaign, where the current model will be available for $1,995 – half off the regular price of $3,995. There’s no need for complex CAD software. Second, they preview and make any adjustments on their Mac, PC, or tablet.
