Longoria’s HR, Ramirez’s pitching help Rays beat Red Sox 4-2

FOX Sports Ken Rosenthal believes the selection of Hazen to be the team’s general manager “will prevent a mass exodus from Boston’s front office and ensures greater continuity”, but the same can not necessary be said for the on-field personnel. Wren has worked with Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski in the past in both Montreal and Florida for a period of 11 years.

“When we talk about making trades or talk about signing free-agent players, we really want him actively involved in that”, Dombrowski explained on Friday prior to the game in front of the Red Sox dugout.

It was thought that Ramirez was nearing a return to the lineup, but the Red Sox ultimately decided that he will not play again this season. Since he has been with the organization for a decade, he is going to provide more insight to Dombrowski about rookies and possible future core players like the ones I mentioned before.

Hazen said Cherington backed his decision to go after the position. Sure, nobody on the team is untouchable anymore, but somebody needs to know how think your gloves need to be before you can touch them. It is worth recalling that, prior to his shoulder injury, he was a wrecking ball in April, hitting.293/.341/.659 with 10 homers.

“Coming here to Fenway Park and watching Wade Boggs, Marty Barrett and Bruce Hurst – memories that I take here in this job”, Hazen said.

The Red Sox also promoted Jared Banner to director of player personnel and named Brad Person the head athletic trainer.

A Massachusetts native who was a two-time All-Ivy League outfielder at Princeton, Hazen was selected by the San Diego Padres in the 31st round of the 1998 draft.

Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Sam Kennedy said this in a statement, “Mike’s leadership, work ethic, and passion for the game are second to none”.

The Boston Red Sox will have to wait for spring training to see if Hanley Ramirez will be any better at first base than he was in left field.

RHP Erasmo Ramirez allowed a two-run homer to DH David Ortiz in the first inning then sailed through the rest of his outing, retiring 18 of the final 20 batters he faced. The position was vacated by Ben Cherington after Dombrowski’s arrival last month. Freeman has always hit the Mets well, but I’d like to think this is him upping his game to Chipper-versus-the-Mets levels. “I was in situations where I was in pretty good counts and just didn’t make a pitch I needed to make”.
