Asia, Brazil, Europe, Indonesia and Japan inhibit half of 100 million new Instagram users. In December of a year ago, the company said it reached the 300 million monthly user mark. Where Instagram has steadily acquired more users, Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) has seen a lack of user growth and that too without a definite plan on part of Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) to pick up more users.

Instagram, the photo sharing social network, has now 400 million active users posting 40 billion photos of food items and landscapes in its service. A blog post from the company celebrates the news, and also highlights how the community is becoming both bigger and more diverse.

Instagram is owned by Facebook, and the company is thrilled to achieve this milestone, according to the blog post.

Of recent, a number of well-known names have joined the site including David Beckham, Caitlyn Jenner, and Toni Kroos.

Twitter was left eating Instagram’s dust after the photo-sharing site boasted that its community has breached the 400 million mark.

And 75 percent of that user base – or some 300 million users – are outside the USA, where Instagram’s potential for ad revenue is just now picking up steam. Ad revenue is about to reach $1.5 billion in 2016, according to a research firm, eMarketer. On the other hand, Instagram is slowly letting advertisers take some space on the network. Facebook did not expose the revenues of Instagram however, analysts estimated it. Instagram has tested ads on the platform for the first time and the ad offerings are also being improved.
