Charleston storm heavily damages 10 homes; no injuries

A tornado struck South Carolina late Thursday night and early Friday morning. Ten residences on Sonny Boy Lane versed bulky damage. Numerous windows were blown out and the strong winds knocked trees onto roofs. There are no reported injuries at this time.

“The cleanup effort is going very well”, said Battalion Chief James Ghi.

The St. Johns Fire Department held a second press conference on Friday morning at 8:00 a.m. They say the department is working with SCDOT to get the roads on Johns Island open again. Eighty-one percent of all South Carolina tornadoes were of EF0 and EF1 (65-110 mph) strength between 1950-2014.

Fortunately, Bercik, his wife and their two dogs who were in the house escaped unharmed even though the house suffered considerable damage. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

Extensive damage was reported on Johns Island, South Carolina, Charleston County Sheriff’s Office said. Some 200 homes were without service during the height of the storm.

The American Red Cross has been requested to assist residents that have been affected by the severe weather.

Emergency officials said at least 10 homes were damaged by the powerful storm.

“I went into the kitchen with an umbrella and found the cell phone underneath a bunch of rubble where we knew the purse was and we did 911 right away which was probably five minutes after the event”, Bercik said.
