Heyneke Meyer makes eight South Africa changes for Samoa showdown

I strongly believe that in the creation of artistic symbols and images, for instance, they have to be rooted or steeped in social reality, in terms of how people act and interact. What had been a dream turned into a nightmare.

Japan back row Amanaki Lelei Mafi has been cleared for the courageous Blossoms’ third Pool B game against Samoa, the Japan Rugby Football Union announced on Friday.

Embarrassed, the government has stood behind the team and its conservative white coach, Heyneke Meyer.

De Villiers said “rugby is a game, but in South Africa it has become so much more than just a game and we carry that responsibility with us every single time we enter the field”. They should rather keep calm and focus on their gameplan, including the set piece and the driving maul. “I phoned the coach and I told him we are a nation of fighters”.

“We are not expecting anything less from South Africa“, he said. Despite all its posturing, rugby, like South African society and institutions in general, remains ossified around a particular culture and/or paradigm and ultimately expresses those dominant principles. Some are calling it the biggest pool match in Rugby World Cup history. It may be a cliché but it really is one game at a time.

Yet despite all their reasons for grievance, I can’t remember any of my Samoan teammates ever complaining about this.

The Boks coach hopes Vermeulen can galvanise his side.

“Japan have made our job harder”. He kicked five penalties, two conversions and scored a try for a personal tally of 24 points.

Meyer will make Wednesday’s team announcement before explaining his choices at a news conference in Birmingham (0900 GMT).

Neither of them have been a force lately.

“He, as a player, is a Jean de Villiers in name only”, Keohane said. “He is a true leader and was an inspirational vice-captain of this team in 2012 and 2013”. Lock Eben Etzebeth was given a recall, too, after being nursed back to full fitness after injury.

It was fantastic to meet so many of our supporters – young and old – who will be at games and shouting us on for the season.

“I am very aware of the criticism that he has come under for selecting me, and very grateful for the opportunity I have again to win”. Live by the sword, fine, but then know when to fall on it. Values are sacred and unfortunately can not be compromised and he did more than that, he rubbished and trampled all over them. He will stubbornly stick to his gameplan no matter what and appears to be blind to the Springboks’ failings.

“It means some players have dropped out of the squad altogether but this is a 31-man campaign and they will have other chances, but we needed to make changes after Saturday’s performance”. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to see that and devise counters.

The 29-year-old has not played since Super Rugby action in May.

There is a huge amount of preparation that goes into an event like the World Cup as you would imagine. It will all depend on Meyer.

“It should come as no surprise that soccer and Bafana Bafana top the charts in terms of the favourite amongst the majority of South Africans – 53 percent saying that this is their favourite team”, said Ipsos.
