Almost half a million people have crossed the Mediterranean to Europe this year, two-fifths of them from Syria, in a surge that has overwhelmed countries like Greece and Hungary.

They asked not to be identified – and were quick to voice anger at some of the other migrants.

In his talks in Ankara, Mr Steinmeier said he wanted to offer additional support to Turkey, which has already taken in massive numbers of refugees from Syria.

De Maiziere also spoke out in favour of caps for refugees on a European level.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development said Europe could expect a record one million people to request asylum this year, and nearly half would probably qualify to be taken in.

“It’s the opposite of what the Chancellor has rightly said, namely that those who arrive in Germany and apply for asylum need a fair procedure”, Gabriel, who’s also chairman of the Social Democratic Party, said Sunday on ARD public television.

Although he appears to be hardening towards the migrant crisis question, saying that many should be sent back either to their home countries, or to another in the region close to home where they can wait for the situation to resolve, he told the magazine opening the German border was not a mistake.

Agela Merkel has urged the U.S.to accept more asylum seekers while Europe is having difficultly coping with the biggest influx of asylum seekers after WW2.

Immigration lawyer Greg Ó Ceallaigh, a barrister at Garden Court Chambers, said this decline in the rate of successful applications was because entry clearance officers are “convinced that [Syrians] are going to claim asylum”.

Meanwhile, at the end of June, some 592,000 people across the European Union were still waiting for their asylum application to be completed, with Italy having the third-largest (48,300) share of pending applications, behind Germany (305,800) and Sweden (56,000).

Massive influx of migrants are entering Europe in recent weeks, in search of refuge in European countries.

“We cannot register and accommodate these people any longer”, said Croatian Prime Minister Zoran Milanović Friday, adding “They will get food, water and medical help, and then they can move on”.
