Samsung cuts price for latest virtual reality headset to $99

And its being created to be 22 percent lighter than the previous Gear VR Innovator Edition, with an improved touch pad and new foam cushioning for comfort. It’s also half of the original cost of the Innovator Gear VR, which was available for $200 (£130). Samsung is hoping the price, along with its capabilities for the full 2015 slate of Galaxy phones, will help virtual reality headsets become mainstream.

Oculus also announced range of new content for its virtual reality products, including new agreements with game developers and movie producers.

This gear still has the trackpad on the temple; however, Samsung made modifications on it. On VR’s predecessor, the trackpad was smooth, making it hard to know if you are already touching it or if it is not sensitive enough. Well, today was the day and as we suspected, a new Samsung Gear VR has been unveiled.

The consumer version of the Gear VR headset will be available for purchase in November ahead of Christmas, according to a statement from Samsung. Where the previous version only worked with Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy Note 4, the latest headset is compatible with all the smartphones Samsung launched this year. Because of reduced weight of the device, it is also described to be more comfortable to wear.

Samsung Electronics on Sept 25 announced its first Gear VR device aimed to consumers, extending its leadership in the wearables category.

Another interesting thing: Facebook’s 360-degree videos, which launched only recently, will be viewable in both the Gear VR and the Oculus Rift.
