Putin will also hold a meeting with Japan’s Premier Shinzo Abe, Peskov added. While a cease-fire has held since the beginning of September, US officials say thousands of Russian troops and heavy weapons remain on Ukrainian soil, something Russia denies.
The White House said Monday’s meeting was requested by the Kremlin.
Carter’s statements came after USA officials announced that President Barack Obama’s administration was pushing for a deal with Russia on both Syria and Ukraine, and that the topics would be the focus of talks next week between Obama and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.
Moscow opted for Monday, when Putin will be in New York to attend the UN General Assembly.
Being Elton John and all, the singer was cool about the whole fake Putin thing, tweeting: “If this unfortunate incident has helped push this vital issue back into the spotlight, then I am happy to be pranked on this occasion”.
John had just returned from a trip lobbying for LGBT rights in Ukraine, where he said he wanted to meet Putin to talk about his “isolating and prejudiced” and “ridiculous” attitude towards gay people, according to The Guardian.
Earnest expressed hope that the meeting might get Russian leaders to think about “whether or not they’re willing to at least consider President Obama’s advice when it comes to reinforcing their military support for the Assad regime“.
Rachel Maddow explains that, insane as it may seem, Russian Federation is bulldozing and incinerating large quantities of imported food in retaliation for sanctions imposed by Western countries for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Russian strategic analyst Igor Sutyagin said 28 planes have been deployed as part of an air regiment in Latakia, including a battalion of motorized infantry and military engineers.
“President Obama will once again use this occasion to reinforce to President Putin that the importance of Russian Federation keeping the commitments that they’ve made in the context of the Minsk agreements”, Earnest said, referring to worldwide agreements calling for a cease-fire and weapon pullbacks.

The two camps also differed over who called for the meeting.
