Jagmohan Dalmiya passes away

Saber Hossain Chowdhury, former president of Bangladesh Cricket Board, said Dalmiya’s contribution to Bangladesh cricket was invaluable.

Dalmiya, typically of Indian sports administrators, had never played the game at any serious level, and owed his position to being politically well-connected.

On March 2, 2015, Dalmiya returned as <strong>BCCIstrong> strong class=’StrictlyAutoTagBold’ strong class=’StrictlyAutoTagBold’ president after a 10-year gap replacing N. Srinivasan. “He was a player’s administrator and was like a father figure in Indian cricket”, said Gambhir. “May Shri Dalmiya’s soul rest in peace”, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also tweeted. “His vision, the way he worked helped Indian cricket scale new heights”, Shukla said. “He shall always be remembered for his untiring hard work and devotion to any activity that he took up”, the president’s statement said. When Srinivasan was embroiled in the IPL controversy, Dalmiya was asked to step in once again in 2013 as interim president and began another tryst whilst holding the top post in Indian cricket administration.

Dalmiya’s death is widely mourned. “Jagmohan Dalmiya suffered a massive gastrointestinal tract hemorrhage”. Known as one of the finest cricket administrators India has ever produced, the 75-year old was not keeping well for the past couple of months. He had previously also served as the President of the global Cricket Council (ICC) FROM 1997 to 2000.

“He started as an administrator at a very young age, he used to come on scooter for practice matches, that was his dedication”. He was instrumental in bringing the 1987 Reliance World Cup in India.

The Assam Sepak Takraw Association secretary Bishnu Ram Nunisa also condoled the death of Dalmiya on behalf of his association. But by introducing ICC Champions Trophy which was an idea of Dalmiya made ICC a cash rich organisation.
