Devon Gales’ spinal injury changed the atmosphere of what was supposed to be a ho-hum game between Georgia and Southern University.

Gales was injured with two minutes left in the third quarter of a 48-6 loss to Georgia on Saturday.

Gales was on the kickoff return team for Southern and according to OnlineAthens.com, his head appeared to make contact with the shoulder of Georgia kicker Marshall Morgan.

Southern’s assistant athletic director Trayvean Scott told ESPN that Gales could move his hands and was in good spirits, but further details of his condition were not immediately available.

Gales, 5-9 and 158 pounds, is a native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

The school released a statement asking “for your continued prayers for Devon and the entire Gales family during this hard time”.
