Super Blood Moon Looms This Weekend

“Moonrise for several days around the time of the full moon closest to the autumnal equinox occurs almost at sunset”. In addition, the moon will be what is known as a Blood moon, because it presents the fourth and final eclipse of a lunar tetrad, which is four straight total eclipses of the moon, spaced at six lunar months apart. In total, there were 6 supermoons in 2015. These happen fairly often – just not at the same time as a supermoon.

And Don Wheeler, a meteorologist at Louisiana Delta Community College, said Louisianians from Shreveport to Monroe and Acadiana to Alexandria can expect relatively clear skies for a almost pristine view.

Dennis Dawson, professor of astronomy at Western Connecticut State… The moon enters the Earth’s shadow, creating a reddish glow on the moon.

Hagee’s book “Four Blood Moons: Something is about to Change”, was turned into a movie just in time for the last blood moon of the tetrad approaching.

The reason the moon can be seen at all when totally eclipsed is that sunlight is scattered and refracted around the edge of the Earth by the planet’s atmosphere.

A lunar eclipse happens when the Sun, Earth, and Moon form a near-perfect lineup in space.

So try to get out there if the weather allows it. The next total lunar eclipse for Canada won’t come until January 31, 2018. The Earth’s shadow covers the moon, which often has a red color, which is often why it is given the “blood” moon nickname.

The live stream will start at 8:00 p.m. EDT and last until at least 11:30 p.m EDT. Combine that will the setting sun and the full moon may look red as it rises. During the partial eclipse, the penumbra should be readily visible as a dusky border to the dark umbral shadow.

Sunday night will be the first time a Supermoon, a full moon that appears larger than normal because it’s closer to Earth than usual, has coincided with a total eclipse since 1982, and it won’t happen again for another 18 years.

The sky viewing will be held from 9 p.m.to midnight. The vaguer shading of the inner penumbra can continue to be readily detected for perhaps another 15 minutes or so after the end of umbral eclipse. “This is only an hour before the time of peak full Moon”.

Astronomers are in for a treat next week with both a Blood Moon and a full lunar eclipse expected to wow sky-gazers.

On the night of Sept 27th and the early morning hours of Sept 28th, a lunar eclipse will be visible for a large portion of the world.

Two-for-one sky shows like these are rare.
