Utilizing a 35-year-old making his first career start and a collection of colleagues behind him, the Red Sox surprisingly picked up their second straight shutout over the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday at Fenway Park, winning by an 8-0 margin.

The catch will certainly be in talks for catch of the year this season in baseball. The Sox were able to prevent any further damage, and hold the Jays to just one hit with runners in scoring position all afternoon.

The left-hander had the best start of his young career on September 16 against the O’s in Baltimore.

With the Red Sox preparing to host the Orioles on Sunday in their home finale, interim manager Torey Lovullo took a moment to commend the team on what it has accomplished over the last six weeks to head into the offseason on a positive note. While that is more than I have made in that time, Ubaldo collects by comparison that much in about seven or eight starts! The Sox had a chance in this series to get themselves out of the basement of the AL East and send the Rays there, but all they did was cement their place there.”He has a big huge curveball and has a fastball that comes out of the same slot”, Orioles catcher Caleb Joseph said. “It fires you up”.

Earlier this month, Hill became the first Red Sox pitcher to fan 10 or more in his initial two starts.

This shut out came a day after Boston journeyman Rich Hill blanked Baltimore with a two-hitter. He allowed two hits, two walks and struck out two.

“We haven’t scored in the last two days, so that kind of starts and ends there for me”, Baltimore manager Buck Showalter said.

“Manny would be the first one to tell you that he spoils us at a very high level of play”.

– Rusney Castillo, Allen Craig, Brock Holt and Jackie Bradley Jr. also contributed a single each and all went 1-for-3. In fact, coming into this game, it was the worst unit in baseball by fWAR.

Seemingly spooked by a 400-foot foul ball off the bat of Josh Donaldson, Boston rookie reliever Noe Ramirez walked Donaldson and Jose Bautista to lead off the inning, and both came around to score on RBI singles by Edwin Encarnacion and Kevin Pillar.

Orioles: CF Adam Jones (back spasms) was not in the lineup for the sixth straight game, but was available off the bench.

The contest remained knotted at 0-0 until the bottom of the fifth inning, when the Red Sox finally reached the scoreboard.

Pablo Sandoval will likely not play again this season. Cleveland can only lose three more games in this situation, and they have the toughest schedule of anyone.
