Kim Kardashian’s ‘Pope is Dope’ Tweet Sparks Outrage in Argentina

But a single comment by the reality TV star on the occasion of Pope Francis’s historic visit to the U.S. was enough to reduce one Argentinian entertainment website to paroxysms of nationalist outrage and accusations of anti-papal hostility.

Kardashian fans were, however, quick to point out that dope was meant in a different way – and meant the Pope was a good guy.

It was hardly incendiary, or even that original.

“Did Kim Kardashian attack the pope?” screamed the headline on Primicias Ya.

As revealed by the Hollywood Reporter, an uncredited reporter for Argentine website Primicias Ya mis-translated the tweet as “the pope is drugs”, writing “it can not be interpreted as positive”.

The writer helpfully reminds readers that Kardashian once featured in a sex tape, before canvassing readers for possible explanations for the “curious tweet”.

Kardashian was more likely referencing the “Pope is dope” T-shirts being worn by excited Americans to mark the pontiff’s first official visit to the country, or the #popeisdope hashtags circulating on social media. The article, which is not bylined, goes on to defend Francis, listing his benevolent acts, and calling the Argentine native “our pope”.

“The pope is dope”, Kardashian tweeted on September 24, Thursday, which got the attention of Argentina’s Catholics who were irritated by the tweet’s message.
