With deal said reached, Christian schools expected to halt strike

The Christian schools, defined as “Recognized but Unofficial and entitled to 75 percent funding of full state schools, have been on strike owing to the severe drop in funding for these schools by the Education Ministry in recent years to approximately 34% of state schools”. “The government and the Education Ministry can not continue to punish the students in the country’s Christian schools”.

Christian schools opened in Israel September 28 after an nearly monthlong strike demanding equality in budgeting. The crisis has been ongoing for a month, resulting in the closure of 47 schools serving around 33,000 Palestinian students from various cities and villages across the occupied territories.

In signing the agreement, the Secretariat also agreed that Christian high-schools would not be able to strike until July 2013 and elementary schools would not be able to strike until December 2016.

A whole new mutual board will just be well-known and check rapport amongst the community center schools and to discover the Education Ministry, Haaretz indicated.

Another joint commission will be charged with discussing matters of importance to both parties. The committee will include government and Christian officials and should conclude its work by March 2016.

6- The ministry of Education will pay the monthly payments for the Christian schools as usual and the schools will commit to compensate the students for the days lost during the strike.

“We see this as a wonderful interim achievement, given that we have not only received a one-off financial support but also an agreement to establish a committee that will deal with the change of our legal status that will bring a long-term solution”, the council said in a statement.

The support we got during the last month in the Government and Knesset as well as overseas in addition to the public exposure in Israeli and global media will provide a platform to implement any positive recommendations that the commission will have for Christian schools.
