Mariners to hire Jerry Dipoto as general manager
Reports from ESPN’s Jim Bowden broke early Monday morning that the team will hire former Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto to fill the position that was vacated with the firing of Jack Zduriencik in August.

Citing an unidentified source, ESPN’s Jim Bowden reported the news that Dipoto was the Mariners’ choice to replace Jack Zduriencik, who was fired August 28.
Dipoto, 47, served as the GM of the Angeles from 2011 until 2015.
One twist emerged over the weekend: Eppler had been viewed as the favorite to become Dipoto’s full-time replacement with the Angels, but reports indicate Josh Byrnes has emerged as a candidate for that post.
Dipoto resigned from the Angels after 3 1/2 years, The Los Angeles Times reported in July. He has recently been working with the Boston Red Sox on an interim basis in a consulting role in the front office.
The Mariners’ search for a new general manager appears to be over and the announcement could come as soon as Monday.

Eppler, 39, has never been a general manager but, in his fourth season as a Yankees assistant, has assisted longtime GM Brian Cashman in all areas of the club’s major league operations. But they also argued about the concept of “feel” in managing a game, pitch location and Dipoto was frustrated with what he believed was Scioscia’s unwillingness to prepare for teams, among other things, according to Grantland.
