Minnesota breweries take home coveted medals at the Great American Beer Festival

Without knowing the brewery, the judges name the three best beers in each of the 92 beer-style categories.

Goldencold Lager, from Susquehanna Brewing Co. of Pittston, Pa., won bronze in the Munich-style helles category.

Jacksonville’s Aardwolf Brewing Co. took a bronze for its Belgian Pale Ale in the Great American Beer Festival, the largest commercial beer competition in the world.

In the last couple of years many craft breweries have either been purchased by mega brewing companies or sold an interest to these giants.

Take Back the Streets, a double pale ale that was briefly on tap at the brewpub this summer, won a bronze medal in the Other Strong Beer category, among 43 entries.

Fat Head’s co-owner and brewer Matt Cole couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.

– Rhinegeist Brewery in Cincinnati: Silver for Sherry Ink in the wood and barrel aged strong stout category.

Bay Shore-based Great South Bay Brewery won a gold medal in the specialty beer category for Hog Cabin, a maple bacon porter.

Iron Hill won silvers for Russian Imperial Stout (the Media location, despite what the GABF announcement says) and The Cannibal (Chestnut Hill location). It’s the first medal for Lager Heads.

Big Dog’s Brewing and Chicago Brewing, both of Las Vegas, also won medals.

It also won gold in the American-style Black Ale category for Midnight Moonlight. They picked up a gold medal for their Sunlight Cream Ale in the Golden or Blonde Ale category for their third medal of the day.

Out of the 336 entries – that’s 5 percent of the overall entries – Strongsville, Ohio’s The Brew Kettle Brewery won bronze. Other breweries are expanding into different states because their original brewery can not produce enough beer and logistically they save shipping costs of moving the beer across the country.
