Will the skies be clear for Sunday night’s eclipse?

All of the weather forecasts you see probably read mostly cloudy.

Put the bad analogy away and you’re left with low pressure in the southeastern USA working with high pressure in the northeast to send clouds back across our share of the Midwest.

Cloudy skies will remain on Tuesday with light to steady rain developing.

We do believe that scattered showers continue into Monday with the coastal low lifting out of the region and a cold front approaching from the northwest. But these clouds for the most part are not opaque, so the moon might still be visible even when clouds are passing in front of it.

We’ll be watching how this cold front interacts with a piece of tropical energy near the Gulf of Mexico and out in the Atlantic Ocean by late-week. The heaviest of the rain will be north and west of Metro Richmond. A stray shower can not be ruled out with the humid atmosphere in place, but most areas will stay dry.

In an awesome stroke of luck (and very good timing), the weekend’s persistent, overcast clouds parted just in time for Washington, D.C., to catch a glimpse of the supermoon lunar eclipse last night. It will be breezy at times with highs around 70. Overall, it’s a cloudy, mild, and muggy night with lows in the middle to upper 60s. Increasing humidity. High: 74.

Tomorrow: Mostly sunny, some afternoon cloudiness, pleasant.
