Last week, school officials placed the Heritage High School history teacher on administrative leave.

Students at a Virginia high school are petitioning for a teacher to return to class after she was put on leave over the use of the word “nigger” in class. “School board policy doesn’t specifically address certain terms but it does address staff conduct and professionalism and that’s what human resources has been taking a look at”, says Price. And misconduct could mean that Pierce is out of a job – after 40 years of teaching.

Despite being a school that is 90 percent black, Lynne Pierce, who is white, has received a lot of support from students and alumni.

More than 1,200 people have signed an online petition to bring the teacher back to school.

During a discussion about the Washington Redskins football team, a student asked the teacher, “What’s the big deal with calling them Redskins?” “It’s not what you think it is; she’s not a bad person”, Williams added to WVEC-TV (She did not respond to Yahoo Parenting’s request for comment).

The teacher said she explained it was inappropriate to use prejudicial and stereotypical names about any racial group. After an investigation by the school division, Pierce has been told she can go back to work Tuesday morning.

“Maybe. I don’t know, maybe”, she said. The focus of the class that day was about Native Americans and the prejudice and derogatory terms that are associated with them, according to Fox News.
