Beshears Get Flu Shots, Urge Others to

The Southwest Utah Public Health Department will hold its annual Flu “Shoot-Out” for Washington County on Tuesday, September 29, at the Red Cliffs Mall in St. George.

This year’s vaccine is expected to be more effective than last year’s shot, which didn’t protect against the newest strain of H3N2 influenza and therefore only had about a 13 percent effectiveness rate against the strain, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

As flu season approaches, Governor Steve Beshear and First Lady Jane Beshear are encouraging others to protect themselves by getting flu vaccines.

Hershey Medical Center reports that this year’s flu vaccines are set to be a good match to most probable flu outbreaks. This year the Trust wants to vaccinate even more staff to reduce the impact of the flu virus both inside its hospitals and in the local communities.

The flu vaccine helps the body create antibodies to the flu virus.

From October 5, the influenza vaccine will be offered to the Trust’s staff by its Occupational Health nurse Flu Fighter team.

Vaccines with three components are called trivalent but there is also a quadrivalent version that adds protection against an additional B virus. There are several different flu shots of this type available, and they are approved for people of different ages. It is approved for people 18 through 64 years of age.
