Those in the United States, Europe, Africa and western Asia viewed the rare coupling Sunday night or early on Monday.

Texan pastor and author John Hagee says this has only happened three times in the past 500 years and claimed it is likely to herald a “hugely significant” world event.

The full moon will be a bit larger than usual because it occurs at a point along its elliptical orbit around the earth that is closer than normal.

In Brooklyn, New York, crowds of people gathered on plazas and sidewalks, gazing up at the sky and trying to take photos with their smartphones – though in other cities, including Washington, cloud cover hid much of the spectacle.

Stargazers across the country were out in full force to catch a glimpse of the total lunar eclipse combined with a full moon.

A super blood moon eclipse “precedes the coming of bad haircuts, regrettable makeup choices, poorly animated and conceived cartoon shows, and leg warmers”, announced Scott Finkelstein. At times, the moon took on an orange or reddish glow.

The moon was 31,000 miles closer to earth.

The last super blood moon, only the fifth recorded since 1900, was in 1982, according to the USA space agency NASA, and the next will not be until 2033.

The event was partly obscured by a haze as the moon rose in the eastern sky. And because it occurred days after the fall equinox, this was also the harvest moon.

The rare event, also called “Blood Moon”, lasted for about one hour and 12 minutes Sunday night.
