Amazon (AMZN) has announced that it will be opening a technology hub in downtown Detroit.

According to a report in Crain’s Detroit Business, Peter Faricy, an Amazon Marketplace vice president and University of Michigan alum, said the company plans to expand its 100-person operation that’s already in place at West Jefferson.
It already has 100 full-time employees at its office in Detroit, reports Crain’s Detroit Business.
In addition to the announcement, Amazon is donating 30 of its Fire tablets and $10,000 to Detroit Public Schools’ Carver STEM Academy. The announcement is expected at Cobo Center later Monday morning.
Detroit’s educational institute’s STEM Academy program aims to provide students with content on math, science, technology, art, and engineering subjects. With the office to function as a technology focused center, Amazon’s attempts to create a grand technology oriented space will surely help the company lure in more customers.
The Seattle-based company will reportedly recruit talent from both Metro Detroit and out of state for work at its Detroit office.
The expansion of Amazon at 150 W. Jefferson is likely to add to downtown’s growing reputation as a tech hub where tech-savvy workers find employment.
“We have a long-term plan to grow our presence in the great state of Michigan, and bring more full-time, high-tech jobs to the city of Detroit”, Faricy said in a prepared statement ahead of Monday’s press conference.

“It’s exciting to see Amazon creating a presence in Detroit and I’m proud to have them here”, said Gov. Rick Snyder.
