Virgin Media has announced that it is increasing its peak broadband speed from 152Mb/s to 200Mb/s, as part of a rebranding exercise dubbed Vivid.

Virgin Media said that, by choosing to upgrade, Virgin Media customers on the lowest available package will receive speeds “at the top end of the range available” from rival providers. The company has, however, stated that customers will be contacted about upgrading from the 1st of October this year, but has so far been silent on pricing for the new Vivid service.
“A typical home now has multiple devices, like tablets, smartphones and games consoles, accessing the internet at any one time so large households, like families or groups of students, need faster speeds”.
This Vivid branding will be applied to all of Virgin’s broadband services from 100Mbps and upwards, but all customers can benefit from the speed increase.
The new “Vivid” network will provide speeds of up to 200Mbps, meaning users can get online and download movies and music quicker than ever before.
Virgin Media is investing heavily in its ultrafast network to meet consumer demand.
Gregor McNeil, managing director of consumer at Virgin Media, said: “Our message is simple: if you want to be certain that you are signing up to true ultrafast broadband speeds of 100Mbps and above, Vivid from Virgin Media is the new standard”.
Those on 50Mbps, 100Mbps or 152Mbps can upgrade to speeds of up to 70Mbps, 150Mbps and 200Mbps respectively.

The free upgrades to some extent counter balance the annual price rises and also by offering speeds that should nearly always beat FTTC based connections winning customers in new Project Lightning areas should become easier.
