The account, which is verified by Twitter, has a bio reading, “I used to work for the government”.

Edward Snowden isn’t just a hashtag anymore. “Your followers will be: the Internet, me, and the NSA”.

So far Snowden has only tweet in which he wrote: “Can you hear me now”. He was only following one account – the NSA.

His information made global headlines when the Guardian newspaper reported that the NSA was collecting the telephone records of tens of millions of Americans.

He had to reach out to Twitter directly as the @Snowden handle was already in use.

The fugitive former USA spy contractor has been living in Russian Federation since they granted him asylum in 2013 after he leaked details of mass US surveillance programs. Two of the charges are under the Espionage Act, a draconian 1917 statute that blocks defendants from explaining why what they did was justified. Snowden’s lawyer, Ben Wizner of the ACLU, told The Intercept that Snowden will be controlling the account.
