Unfortunately, for Conker fans, word of Project Spark’s free-to-play transformation arrived alongside the news that development of Conker’s Big Reunion – the episodic game built entirely in Project Spark – will no longer continue.
Launched in beta form back in March previous year, Project Spark aimed to give gamers and hobbyists tools to create their own games for Windows and Xbox without the need to mess around with complex programming and expensive development kits. Then head down to the comments section and let us know if the free-to-play transition has convinced you to revisit Project Spark next month. The reason for this change is that Microsoft says it wants to “encouraging more user generated-content and open up the Project Spark experience”.
As a result of the jump to free, Microsoft will no longer be producing DLC for Project Spark. “We’ve been an incubation engine for ideas from epic to artistic and we plan to continue doing so”, wrote Xbox’s Rahul Sandil. Microsoft Store credits will be awarded automatically to all users within 30-60 days after October 5. Well, Sandil said over 200,000 creators have released “tens of millions of custom objects, behaviors and experiences”, with up to 400 new games hitting the platform daily.
Every piece of content released for Project Spark so far will be free to download from that date, regardless of whether it was previously paid content. There will also be new assets coming to the game, and a stack of updates to the platform will expand the offering.
