Netflix Snags Streaming Rights for ‘Jane the Virgin’, ‘Zoo’ and ‘Colony’

Leading up to its Season 1 premiere Netflix has licensed second window streaming rights to COLONY, which now joins the ranks of other popular, highly-rated, and critically acclaimed series that Netflix has recently acquired such as “How to Get Away with Murder“, “Jane the Virgin”, and “Zoo“, all entering their second seasons. The deals follow Netflix’s announcement earlier this month that it acquired global rights for ABC’s How to Get Away With Murder, a hot drama. COLONY is a co-production between Legendary Television and Universal Cable Productions. The series is set to air on January 14th, 2016 on United States of America and they have their own first window streaming/SVOD set up for it. But for the cord cutters that wait it out, you now know where it’ll land.

Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s chief content officer told the Times: “We are a big buyer, and these guys are in the business of making and monetizing content”.

A few people view Netflix as a major threat though to TV ad revenue, afraid that Netflix will eventually take over network television while others disagree. “Both Zoo and Jane The Virgin have already generated excitement in the USA and internationally, and we look forward to expanding their audience to Netflix members globally”.

Season one of “Jane the Virgin”, the telenovela where Golden Globe victor Gina Rodriguez plays a virgin who ends up accidentally pregnant, will launch on Netflix in the United States on October. 12, the same day that season two premieres on the CW network.

“Zoo“, which is based off of a novel by James Patterson, aired over the summer and was the most watched scripted television series of the season.

Jane and Zoo are produced by CBS. It will be available in all countries, except Canada, via Netflix by 2016.

Netflix bought streaming rights to the new show “Colony” without waiting to see if it would be a hit.

“As we ready to premiere COLONY in January, this deal with Netflix will expand the global audience reach of a show we’re all so proud of right out of the gate”, said Jeff Wachtel, Chief Content Officer, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment and President, Universal Cable Productions. Compared to the $3.7 billion they spent in 2014, it would seem the streaming company is just as dedicated as ever to creating the largest library of popular film and TV streaming content imaginable.
