Antonelli Remembers Yogi Berra

Sure, Yogi was a amusing guy and maybe that’s why people forget that on the baseball field he was one of greatest catchers and clutch hitters in the history of the game. Often comical in nature, Yogisms represent the best lines Berra gave the press during his long tenured career. “Yogi will be missed”, Trump wrote.

Timothy Cardinal Dolan said he felt a “special connection” with Berra because they were both raised in Saint Louis.

Born Lawrence Peter Berra, he earned the nickname “Yogi” from a childhood friend who said the snake charmer in a movie looked like Berra.

His baseball career was interrupted by a tw0-year stint in the U.S. Navy, which included serving as a gunner’s mate during the D-Day invasion in 1944 and receiving a Purple Heart after being wounded in an assault on Marseilles. Kaline said he and his wife, Louise, would have dinner with Berra and his wife, Carmen, in Cooperstown.

“My first two years, I was terrible”.

True to form, Berra told Simon: “I wish I could make these up”.

“My favorite line about Yogi is, is they said “we’re having pizza for dinner”. He was the catcher for Don Larsen’s ideal game in the 1956 World Series, and he holds many records as a catcher. During that season, Berra coined the famous phrase “it ain’t over till it’s over”.

“There was no question about his love for baseball and his dedication to baseball”, says fan Michael Curtis of Houston, TX. “Luckily, because Yogi didn’t strike out too much, I struck out Yogi Berra and they took me out and I never had to pitch to Joe DiMaggio”. That was just what came out.

Earlier today, the world of baseball lost one of its iconic figures with the news of the passing of Yogi Berra at the age of 90.

So, he joined the nearby New York Mets as a player and coach.

Berra is the last link to a bygone era in baseball, but also in life.

He was sacked once again, by Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, in 1985, after just 22 games. He was 90 years old.
